Abyss is an unlockable active item in The Binding of Isaac, added in the Repentance DLC.
Consumes all item pedestals in the room and gives a unique red locust familiar for each item consumed.
The locusts are permanent once created, and up to 64 can exist at a time. Consuming more items after this number will replace older locusts. This limit is shared with Blue Flies and Blue Spiders.
The locusts loosely follow Isaac similarly to Blue Flies, and charge in the direction he's firing until they hit an enemy, wall or an obstacle, dealing Isaac's damage per tick, 4.29 times per second.
Some items, when consumed, will produce a unique locust with different behavior. Check the respective item pages to see if Abyss would create such a locust.
If at the limit of 64 locusts and multiple item pedestals are present in the room, Abyss will only consume half of the items.
Items can be consumed while the pick-up animation is playing, i.e. Isaac is holding the item above his head.
Absorbing items counts as Isaac taking them, thus will activate Boss Rush, Challenge Rooms, and similar mechanics.
If Abyss is used in a room with linked choice item pedestals, only one of them will be absorbed, while the others will vanish as if Isaac took them.
