This item is a reference to a Chinese legend:

Once upon a time, there was a monster. He kills people. He destroys houses. He was considered undestroyable. He only occurs every new year's eve, so he was names "Nian" (年), and villagers will escape from their village to survive that night.
That was until one day an old man occurred in the village, announcing that he knows the way to defeat "Nian"!
Nian is afraid of Red color, as it might be considered as flame! Nian is afraid of the sound of explosion!
People discovered these weak points, and they're no longer afraid of monster Nian anymore.
Every New Year's eve, they put New Year scrolls by their doors. They play firecrackers. They keep the light on for all night.
And after that, the monster Nian never occurred anymore.

This can be one of the reason that Chinese people considers red as propitiousness.
